PARENTS URGED TO REPORT CHILDREN'S REACTIONS TO FOOD DYES
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is asking America's parents for help in its campaign to convince the Food and Drug Administration that synthetic dyes, such as Yellow 5 and Red 40, don't belong in foods, especially those consumed by children. The dyes are being phased out in European countries because of important new evidence showing that the dyes, and perhaps the preservative sodium benzoate, cause hyperactivity and other behavior problems in children.
http://www.cspinet.org/fooddyes

Consumption of food dyes has increased five-fold over the past 30 years, according to FDA data. Most multinational food companies are already phasing those dyes out of foods in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe-even though American versions of the very same products continue to get their colors from synthetic dyes.  The syrup in a strawberry sundae from a McDonald's in the U.K. gets its red color from strawberries; in the U.S., the red color comes from 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, 6-hydroxy-5-((6-methoxy-4-sulfo-m-tolyl)azo)-, disodium salt, a coal-derived chemical otherwise known by its less unappetizing name, Red 40.  Similarly, a Betty Crocker yellow cake mix is colored in the United States with Yellow 5 and Yellow 6, but in Britain with safe natural colorings. "The food industry won't fix its American foods until the FDA tells them to," said Jacobson.  If companies like Mars, Kellogg, and McDonald's were responsible, they would immediately begin switching to safe, natural colorings in the United States."  http://www.cspinet.org

HOMEWORK
Your homework assignment for the next week, should you accept, is to purchase (if you don't already own one) a 1 or 2-cup Pyrex Food Storage Container.  Keep it in your purse, car, backpack, etc. Why? While restaurant leftovers are great and can provide a nice next day meal, most leftovers are sent home with you in a Styrofoam container. 15 million tons or Styrofoam are produced each year and even if they are recycled, there is a negative environmental impact. 1-cup and 2-cup Pyrex Round Dish Food Storage Containers (under $4 each) come with dark blue covers and can be used to store food as well as warm it in a microwave unlike plastic containers.

HDC e-blasts are distributed to over 5,000 readers weekly. We love to promote all things eco-friendly, health-supportive, organic, sustainable, and community-supportive. If you are a local business owner or organization leader that supports these efforts, our readers would love to know about you! E-mail Laura@HealthyDining.org.

FROM THE MAIL BAG
Hi Laura,
Do you know anything about Vitamix devices?  I am considering getting one though they are expensive so I want to be sure they are worth it. Do you know if they truly provide more nutrients such as calcium than a regular juicer? I know that fruit smoothies are delicious but do you know if their vegetable beverages and soups taste good?  Apparently, you can prepare hot soup in these devices.
I am looking for a way to get healthy meals and nutrients without lots of cooking!   Thanks! Gretchen

Hi Gretchen - Vitamix was covered in the January 2008 issue of Healthy Dining Chicago.

Hello Laura -
I'm very glad to have recently learned about Healthy Dining! I'm working with an organization called NeighborSpace, an urban land trust preserving open space in Chicago for community gardens. There are currently 65 gardens throughout the City and many of these focus on food production. NeighborSpace ensures that these spaces are forever devoted to community gardens. We are hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, October 18 and we'd love it if you would include the information in your weekly e-blasts. More information can be found on our web site
http://www.Neighbor-Space.org or by calling 312.431.9406.
Thank you!
Best, Elizabeth Low

Until next time,

PS - HDC postcards continue to go out to volunteers and subscribers as time permits. The purpose of the card is to re-iterate (and in some instances clarify) all the things that HDC hopes to stand for as a community effort. When you receive yours, I hope that you will pass it along to someone unfamiliar with HDC or keep it on your refrigerator for guests to spot. It's part of our Each One Reach One campaign.  Additionally, if you know of a great place where we can put out a few dozen for those who pass by, please do tell.  Thanks in advance!
